A new discovery for me, Martha Rose is an independent brand with a quintessential British aesthetic. Now in its second season, it’s still a relatively new brand which was founded by Martha Coomber, an art and textiles graduate and ex-underwear and print designer, now turned indie businesswoman.
At first glance, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection, “Up The Garden Path”, contains a small selection of bras, bottoms and nightwear pieces. However, many of the designs come in multiple fabric options so there is more choice than first meets the eye.
The fabrics Martha has chosen are all very different, but the colour palette of muted blues, greys and whites that runs throughout the collection meshes everything together wonderfully. The Dahlia and Anemone bras in ‘Navy’ for example are both gorgeous with their eclectic-yet-complementary blend of gingham, polkadots and plain cotton shirting.
The cohesiveness of the fabric selection makes Martha Rose the perfect pick-n-mix lingerie brand. Whichever bra you like, whichever knickers, they’re going to look gorgeous together. They might not both be available in exactly the same fabrics, but they still work as a set.
The Anemone bra is a simple, underwired plunge with sweet, ruched straps and a 3-part cup for uplift. The Meadowsweet bra is a 2-part cup with thicker straps and a slightly longline band. The Dahlia is the bralette of the collection, with a very classic shape and boning added at the side for a little structure.
To match, you have a choice of the Tansy thong, semi-high waisted Forget-Me-Knot knicker with its mesh sides and ruched, silk satin waistband, or the delightful Patchwork knicker. This last one is a low-rise brief made up from 6 panels at the front, and was an ingenious idea to reduce wastage – it’s made from all the scraps of fabric left over from creating the rest of the collection!
Finally, Martha Rose also offers a sleep set – the Peony boxer short which is based on a vintage men’s design, and the Bellflower tank which features a simple cut but in a gorgeous fabric. Made from silk satin with cotton-bound edges, this floral print is designed by Martha herself and was inspired by a whimsical English garden path.
Up The Garden Path by Martha Rose is available to buy on her website, with prices ranging from £32 to £70. Sizes range from 32B-36D and XS-L, and everything is made here in Britain.
