Are you planning on buying someone lingerie this February 14th? Or mulling it over, but feeling a little daunted at the prospect of trying to pick out something your giftee will actually like?
The intimacy of lingerie is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it makes it the perfect gift for such a romance-filled occasion. On the other, it can make it pretty tricky to work out what someone else would feel comfortable, confident and beautiful in, since lingerie is such a very personal thing. It’s not quite as easy as buying a box of chocolates.
The key to nailing it is to make the gift as thoughtful as possible. Remember that you are buying the lingerie for them, so don’t grab the first thing that catches your eye. Take the time to carefully consider what your giftee normally wears, so that you can choose something similar and feel pretty confident that it will be their cup of tea.
HauteFlair have put together an extensive guide to lingerie shopping for Valentine’s Day, and I wanted to share a few suggestions of my own too. Here are my top 4 tips to help you buy your partner the perfect lingerie gift:
1. Stick to their usual style
There are so many different lingerie styles out there – bras alone come in padded vs. unpadded, wired vs. unwired, opaque vs. sheer and full-cupped vs. demi-cupped varieties, to name just a few options. Take note of what your partner usually wears, and look for lingerie that’s similar.
If they never wear thongs for example, there’s probably a reason for that. It could be that they find them really uncomfortable! Or, if they’re always wearing lingerie that’s black or brightly-coloured, then cutesy pastels might just not be their thing. Pay attention to these details to really get to know your giftee’s style.
2. Step it up a notch
You do want to take your partner’s underwear preferences into account. However just because your other half has a stack of beige bras they always wear to work, that doesn’t mean they want to receive another one for Valentine’s! This is a special treat after all, so go for something a bit fancier than whatever their ‘everyday’ style is.
Picking out a lingerie set in a similar shape and colour to their usual, but a more luxurious fabric (such as silk, lace or velvet) is a great way to go.
3. Get the size right
Or at least try to! Bra fit is notoriously tricky to get right, and sizing does vary between brands, but if you know your partner’s usual bra size then you do at least have a good chance of your gift fitting well. Bear in mind that it’s important to know the cup and band size – it’s not as simple as knowing that you partner is a ‘C cup’ because a 32C and a 36C are very different things.
If you don’t know your giftee’s bra size, look for cupless pieces which are much more flexible on fit – camisoles, chemises, pyjamas, robes and so on.
4. Complete the gift
Lastly, if you’re buying a set with suspender straps, include a pair of stockings too. Throw in some chocolates or a bath bomb. Buy the store’s gift wrapping upgrade (or pop it in a gift box yourself). Make receiving the lingerie as lovely an experience as actually wearing it!
