I’m going through something of a sheer mesh phase right now. I’m late to the trend, I know. But there’s something particularly entrancing to me about this barely-there fabric – especially when it forms a backdrop for stunning embroidery work.
Though that said, I’m also partial to sheerness that’s a bit plainer; I’ve adored the look of a simple, mesh-only bra ever since I tried the famous Dessous by now-defunct brand Claudette. You get an almost-naked look, but with all the lift and shaping that a bra provides.
Ultra-sheer lingerie can seem a little daunting, especially if you’re used to shopping for pieces that cover you up. If you’re nervous about trying sheer lingerie for the first time, remember you can always opt for a garment that mixes translucent and opaque fabrics, or one with a busy lace pattern that obscures the fact you’ve got so much skin on show beneath.
For more tips on choosing and wearing sheer lingerie, check out this guide by online retailer HauteFlair. Below I’ve shared my 15 favourite sheer pieces from their website, alongside the three reasons I personally love this look:
It’s got sex appeal
If you’re specifically going for a ‘sexy’ look, few things are as daring or as captivating as lingerie that’s see-through! It’s like being dressed and undressed at the same time, revealing as much as you are covering. The effect is especially ‘barely-there’ if you go for something whisper-thin or in a colour close to your natural skin tone – though classic black is always a good ‘sexy lingerie’ colour choice too.
It’s great for layering
Coming back to ideas for just dipping your toes in the look rather than going all-out sheer, mesh is perfect for pairing with other lingerie to build a more interesting look. Imagine the long-sleeved bodysuit above over a strapalicious bra set for example, or worn underneath a corset. You can even sneak some lingerie into your outerwear look this way, for that unique finishing touch.
Another layering trick that I wear myself is to wear a sheer, high-neckline bra such as this one or this one – which are pretty, but don’t offer much support – over a plain plunge or balconette. One provides shaping whilst the other adds aesthetic interest!
It’s cool and comfy
It’s not all about appearances. Sheer lingerie can be great for practical reasons too! A wispy touch of light fabric against the skin is obviously more breathable than something thicker – the fact that sheer lingerie is so lightweight makes it perfect for keeping the amount of fabric on your body to a minimum, so you can stay cool in warm weather. Bonus points if it’s also a natural fibre such as silk chiffon.
If you’re a fan of sheer lingerie too, let me know why in the comments below! Have you got another reason to love it that I hadn’t thought of?
