Lingerie Lookbook: Lola and August 2016 Collection

I see a lot of lingerie designs every week, unsurprisingly. Whilst I do see a lot that I like, it’s a lot rarer that I discover something new that takes my breath away. Lola and August is one such brand.

Based in Toronto, Canada, Lola and August is a collaboration between mother-and-daughter duo Jouhaina and Sandra Mansour. Together, they create pieces inspired by the romance of European lingerie, all handmade in Canada.

What I’m most drawn to in Lola and August’s designs is the lace – the material itself and the way it’s been used. You all know I love a good lace, and these ones are absolutely beautiful! I feel like I need to go back and update my best-brands-for-luxury-lace post, because Lola and August totally deserves a place on that list.

The exquisite way they handle lace in their designs is best shown off in the delicate Miss Daisy, an on-trend bralette and brief set. Available in beige or pink, the bra’s band is trimmed at the front with thick, eyelash-edged scallops, whilst the lace has been left raw-edged and ruched on the straps for a luxuriously textured finish.

The knickers featured the same ruched lace around the hips, and it’s all finished off with beautifully-detailed gold hardware and unusual, sheer-in-the-middle elastic.

If your attitude to lace is simply ‘more is more!’, then you’ll love the Pétale de Rose and Belle de Nuit sets – both wonderfully relaxed crops and seductively-short skirts just wide enough to really show of the lace’s pattern. Both sets feature delicate pearl buttons and pleated georgette ribbon on the straps, and come with the option of a simple g-string if you prefer more coverage under the skirt.

Belle de Nuit is the kind of set ID Sarrieri – those masters of lace lingerie – could have designed, but it’s Pétale de Rose that’s my favourite. This oh-so-romantic concoction of blush and rose pink is just delightfully girly in a grown-up way – the kind of lingerie I imagine real fairytale princesses would wear!

Lola and August might not look like an ultra-modern brand at first glance, but there are definitely lots of little nods to current trends – the 80s style high legline of the Strawberry Shortcake knicker, the racer-back of the Forget Me Not bra, the sports-luxe appeal of the mesh Angélique bodysuit that’s draped with pearls and glass beads at the back. Not to mention all the soft bralettes!

I also love that attention has really been paid to detail – to the finer details such as twisted gold hardware and beading at the end of ribbons, but also to that huge detail that so often gets overlooked in lingerie, the back! Everything by Lola and August looks at stunning from the back as it does from the front – some pieces even more so – and that, for me, is what really sets a high-end brand apart from a mid-market one.

The whole collection, whilst varied, is super cohesive and chances are, if you like one piece you’re going to like the whole lot. I know I do! Lola and August is whimsical and romantic, but at the same time also very sexy – from plunging necklines to skimpy skirts, and with a whole lot of sheerness going on, this would be the perfect lingerie to take with you on a honeymoon.

Lola and August is a luxury, handmade brand and prices are accordingly high – bras start at CAD$220 (roughly £117 or US$170), bottoms start at CAD$65 (~£35 or US$50) for a basic g-string or CAD$169 (~£90 or US$130) for one of the fancier styles, and the most expensive item is the Angélique bodysuit at CAD$699 (~£372 or US$540). From what I can see though, it looks to be worth every penny! Sizes range from XS to XL.
