Vellutini is one of those lingerie brands that caught my attention the instant it appeared in my Instagram feed. Specifically, it was the Milena bra that made me stop scrolling and hit follow – a statement piece in sheer beige mesh that’s embroidered with distinctive branching coral and outlined with silk in the same red colour.
Coral is truly at the heart of this brand, which was founded by fashion graduate Jeanne Davies in her native Corsica. It’s a place with a rich heritage of coral carving, where newborns still receive traditional gifts of coral for protection and where it is regularly used in jewellery and décor – Davies herself has coral jewellery that has been passed down to her from generations ago.

The coral in Corsica has a distinctive red colour, which is represented in the Vellutini logo and in the pops of red that run throughout the collection, whether it’s an embroidered motif or a real coral charm, carved into the traditional Corsican hand symbol. Davies was particularly drawn to the idea of creating lingerie as a way to wear this customary good luck / protection amulet close to the skin.
Coral harvesting in France is heavily regulated, and she sources all of hers through a licensed local partner, one of only a handful on the island permitted to do so to ensure that it’s sourced sustainability. The other materials are sourced in Italy, including silk from near Lake Como – the biggest silk-producing region in Europe – while the manufacturing happens at a factory near Rome that specialises in small-batch production.

The Vellutini silhouettes include a touch of 1920s and 30s inspiration in the form of high-waisted, beautifully-panelled tap pants which fasten with a row of buttons, while other styles, such as the underwired Milena bra set, feel much more modern. But it’s all tied together through the use of premium materials and those signature coral touches.
